Dear friends,
As part of my study (adhyayan), I have taken up the assignment of translating Madhyasth Darshan into English. I started working on this in May 2007 on Baba ji's asking. "It will help in your study" - he had said. The need for English translation was being expressed from many quarters. I too needed something to make myself useful. The first book - Manav Vyavhar Darshan (Holistic view of Human Behaviour) - got released in New Delhi at Rajghat as a part of conference on "Teachers Education for Peace and Harmony".
"Truth is communicable in words to those who want to understand" - is the cornerstone postulation of Madhyasth Darshan. If Truth is communicable in one language then it should be communicable in all languages. With this premise, I accepted language to be no more and no less than a means for communicating the intended meaning between the speaker/writer to the listener/reader of words. The approach used for this translation is simple. I have chosen those English words which sounded "close enough" to me for conveying the intended meaning. The places where I didn't find "close enough" English words, I have taken the Hindi words directly. The words chosen thus have been defined according to Madhyasth Darshan. The original Hindi text is provided alongside for ready reference.
This translation work is an initiative for me. An initiative is to do something more than what you are currently capable of, with the objective of achieving that capability. I had started this work with the objective of achieving the understanding of human behaviour. I have no hesitation in saying that I have not achieved that objective yet. However, I can definitely say that this translation work has helped in my progress with understanding.
Manav Vyavhar Darshan book is not meant for reading, it is meant for studying. And study requires both student and teacher - while book is just the course material, mere information. The strength of this book is not from the information it contains, but from the people who study and teach with this book. The core strength of this book is realization (anubhav) of Shree A. Nagraj. I hope this book will make Madhyasth Darshan more accessible to English speaking people. I hope this book will bridge the divide of Hindi and English language.
The English version has scope for improvement - in choice of words, accuracy in communicating the intent, and style of presentation. This scope for improvement is also scope for our collaboration in this book's presentation. I am hoping to get lot of constructive feedback from the teachers and students of Madhyasth Darshan for improving this book.
Manav Vyavhar Darshan is about study of human being. Since human being is not alone, this book is about study of human being in existence. It is the widest canvas that could ever be imagined. This book is about evolution, consciousness, religion, orderliness, society, state, science, environment, nature, space, justice, truth, happiness, relationships, morality, ethics, ... In today's age of specialization, it may seem incredulous. I think, Madhyasth Darshan is able to accomplish this because of simplicity, naturalness and directness which comes from realization in truth.
It is also important to be clear about what this book is not. This book is not a comparative study of this thought with other thoughts. Darshan means - first hand account of having seen (understood) reality. This book attempts to say in English what has been seen (understood) by Shree A. Nagraj. This book is not my claim or assertion of having seen (understood) what he has seen (understood). I am not a scholar of English language and my command on English language is at best intermediate. This book is not an exhibition of literary talent therefore. This book is an attempt of communicating the intent in original presentation of Shree A. Nagraj, so that Madhyasth Darshan literature becomes more accessible to English speaking people.
Madhyasth Darshan is for mainstream. It is for common people, everyday people. Also it is for the humankind as a whole - and not just for those who speak Hindi. English was earlier perceived as a colonial left-over in India. Those who spoke English were considered elite. This situation has changed to a large extent. Much of mainstream education in India today is in English medium. English language has become India's calling-card for the world. English is spoken across the world today and it enjoys the mainstream status. If message of Madhyasth Darshan is to be taken to the world anytime soon then we need to have its translation into English. This book is a small step in this direction.
English translation of Madhyasth Darshan will be carried out like a "open source project" in the spirit of collaboration and volunteering. There are a number of people today who are presenting Madhyasth Darshan (Jeevan Vidya) in English in the form of workshops and also in the form of literature. There is a need to harmonize these presentations and align them with the reference presentation by Shree A. Nagraj under his guidance. This is an opportunity of learning from one another and converging. I will look forward to your suggestions, comments and feedback about the book and for the steps ahead.
